79-Year-Old Peninsula Woman Missing After Hike With Partner and Friends In Portola Valley

San Francisco, CALocal News

Margaret "Elaine" McKinley, 79, went missing Thursday during a hike at Windy Hill Preserve in Portola Valley, where she was celebrating her partner Kit Durgin's birthday. Durgin reported that McKinley, who suffers from dementia, ran ahead of the group and was not found despite their attempts to catch up. Search efforts began on Friday, involving over 100 volunteers, K-9 units, and air support as they scoured the area. Durgin shared her emotional turmoil, worrying about McKinley's safety and well-being, particularly during the night without her phone. McKinley enjoys an active lifestyle, participating in ballroom dancing and hiking, which Durgin noted helps them avoid the feeling of caregiving.

She was last seen wearing a red jacket and black pants, and authorities urge anyone with information to call 911. This case highlights the challenges faced by caregivers of individuals with dementia during outdoor activities. The search continues to bring hope for McKinley's safe return.
