Monica Magtotos utility boxes a healing love for San Francisco

San Francisco, CALocal News

Monica Magtoto has transformed ten utility boxes on Guerrero Street into vibrant art installations focused on healing, contributing to the Mission District's lively character. Her artwork features a variety of images such as hearts, butterflies, and more, painted over the traditional dark green boxes. This initiative is part of the “Paint the City” project, which involves 24 artists painting 241 utility boxes across San Francisco. Magtoto, who is also a yoga instructor and energy worker, draws inspiration from her diverse Filipino, Mexican, Irish, and Cape Verdean heritage. She expressed her desire to heal the city's spirit through her art, stating, “If I could heal the spirit of the city, this is where I would start.

” The community's response has been encouraging, with many recognizing her work as they pass by. Magtoto's family takes pride in her achievements, often sharing photos of themselves in front of her painted boxes. This project not only beautifies the area but also fosters a sense of connection and healing within the community.
