Buena Vista Horace Mann school homeless shelter to close, relocate to Potrero Hill
The Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8 School homeless shelter will close by June 13, 2025, and transition to Downtown High School in Potrero Hill. City officials confirmed that the two dozen families, almost all of whom are newcomer immigrants, will receive guaranteed housing options either in permanent housing or other city-contracted shelters. The new shelter, set to open on July 1, will accommodate 80 beds, increasing capacity by 20 beds compared to the current site. Families will still need to leave the shelter during school hours, maintaining a structured schedule akin to previous arrangements. This closure aligns with prior announcements regarding renovations at the school, with plans for the shelter to return once construction is completed in 2028.
Valdez stated that choosing a new location close to Buena Vista was a priority, and Downtown High emerged as the best option. The new site features elevators for families with disabilities, a dining hall, and a courtyard for children to play. “It’s a wonderful site,” Valdez said, highlighting the dignity it provides for families.
