All lanes reopened after hours-long police standoff on Bay Bridge subject in custody, CHP says

A police standoff on the Bay Bridge concluded Wednesday afternoon, leading to significant traffic disruptions on I-80. The California Highway Patrol reported that the incident began around 2:30 PM when a man started climbing on the bridge. By 7:30 PM, all lanes were reopened, following the successful resolution of the standoff. Officers confirmed that the individual was taken into custody after climbing under the lower deck of the bridge around 4 PM. The standoff prompted closures of all eastbound lanes and the #1 and #5 westbound lanes, causing severe traffic delays.

This incident underscores the challenges of ensuring public safety in high-traffic urban areas. The CHP expressed gratitude for the public's patience during the incident. Such events raise concerns about mental health and public safety on major infrastructure.
