It Might Soon Cost You 3 an Hour to Park In Golden Gate Park
San Francisco's Recreation and Parks Department plans to propose a parking fee in Golden Gate Park, potentially charging up to $3 per hour to combat a budget deficit. This initiative could generate approximately $10 million annually, which would help preserve essential services such as maintenance and youth programs. Director Phil Ginsburg highlighted the importance of aligning the department's revenue with its operational costs. The parking fee proposal is one of several recommendations submitted to Mayor Daniel Lurie, including a $5 fee for tennis court use and leasing golf courses to private operators. However, opposition arises from some commission members, including Commissioner Larry Mazzola, who worries about diminishing access for drivers.
Mazzola previously criticized the closure of JFK Drive, indicating a trend against car access in the park. The proposal may trigger protests from motorists, similar to past controversies around car-free initiatives. The outcome could significantly impact how residents and visitors access Golden Gate Park.
