Formerly SF-Based Artist Found Dead In Placerville After Being Reported Missing In December
Somboun Sayasane, a 75-year-old artist and refugee from Laos, was reported missing from his South Sacramento home on December 28, shortly after being last seen on Christmas Day. Authorities discovered his body in a remote area of Placerville on April 17, leading to a homicide investigation. Police believe Sayasane died on December 26, and his roommate, 32-year-old Benjamin Dougherty, has been charged with first-degree murder. His 74-year-old father, Robert Dougherty, is charged with being an accessory after the fact for assisting in the disposal of Sayasane's body. Both men were arrested in Petaluma and are being held without bail.
Sayasane was known for his contributions to the local art scene, including a book of paintings titled "The Park in the City. " His positive impact on the community is remembered by those who knew him, including journalist Ben Fong-Torres, who called him "one of the good ones. " The case underscores ongoing concerns about violence and justice in the region.
