San Francisco, CALocal News

The Bring Your Own Big Wheel race celebrated its 23rd year on Easter Sunday, attracting hundreds to Vermont Street in San Francisco. Participants relished in the community spirit and adrenaline, with nine-year-old Sullivan Libby winning the kids' race. His father, Nate Libby, humorously anticipated his own race, highlighting the event's family-friendly atmosphere. Organizer Frog Gilmore, who has been involved since 2004, noted that the event remains sponsor-free, relying on community donations to cover costs exceeding $12,000. This includes expenses for permits, EMTs, and hay bales to ensure safety.

Bill Landers, a veteran racer, emphasized the joy the event brings to first-time participants, underscoring its significance in fostering community connections. The race's unique, playful spirit continues to resonate with locals, making it a cherished tradition. As the city raises costs, Gilmore remains committed to maintaining this beloved event for years to come.
