The Park at the Former Great Highway Now Has a New Name Sunset Dunes

San Francisco, CALocal News

The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Commission has officially named the new park, formerly the Great Highway, Sunset Dunes. This decision was made after an extensive public engagement process where over 1,900 residents selected Sunset Dunes as their favorite name. General Manager Phil Ginsburg praised the park's conversion as the largest pedestrianization project in California history, noting its rapid popularity with visitors. The park is already the third most-visited in the city, drawing 8,000 visitors every weekend. Some local residents expressed opposition, citing traffic concerns, but the commission emphasized the historical significance and community support for the name.

Various whimsical naming suggestions were acknowledged, but Sunset Dunes emerged as the clear favorite. The park is scheduled for its grand opening on April 12, 2025, marking a significant milestone in San Francisco's urban landscape. With its expansive space of over 1,000 acres, Sunset Dunes is poised to become a cherished destination for both locals and visitors alike.
