Waymo coming to San Francisco airport after striking deal with city
Mayor Daniel Lurie's administration has successfully negotiated a deal with Waymo, allowing the autonomous vehicle company to map San Francisco International Airport (SFO) as a precursor to future robo-taxi services. This development makes SFO the first airport in California to accommodate Waymo, facilitating a significant expansion of its operations in the Bay Area. Notably, the agreement imposes restrictions on commercial activities, preventing Waymo from engaging in the transport of goods, a move designed to placate the Teamsters union. The union has been actively working to safeguard jobs in the delivery industry, particularly as autonomous vehicles threaten traditional roles. The permit, which became effective on March 14, is valid for a month but can be extended, allowing the airport to reassess the situation.
Peter Finn of Teamsters Local 856 commended the agreement as a balanced approach to integrating new technology while considering safety and employment. Waymo's expansion follows its recent victories in San Francisco, where it gained the right to pick up and drop off passengers. This partnership not only represents a technological advancement but also reflects San Francisco's commitment to innovation and economic recovery in a rapidly changing transportation landscape.
