Latinx Club drops out of S.F. Democratic Party, 2nd club to do so this year
The San Francisco Latinx Democratic Club has announced its departure from the San Francisco Democratic Party, citing neglect of the Latinx community's critical issues. This marks the second such exit this year, following the Rose Pak Asian American Club's withdrawal due to distrust among monolingual Chinese seniors regarding Democratic candidates. The Latinx Club's statement highlights the party's failure to support resolutions condemning attacks on birthright citizenship and immigrant rights. The club's leadership pointed out that only one Latino currently holds a position on the Democratic County Central Committee, despite Latinx individuals comprising 16% of San Francisco's population. Furthermore, the appointment of Eric Kingsbury, a white appointee, to a vacant supervisor seat has raised concerns about equity and representation.
Club leaders emphasized their members' unanimous decision to leave the party and their intention to charter under separate Democratic entities. This move reflects a growing discontent with local Democratic leadership and aims to ensure that the voices of the Latinx community are better represented. The ongoing internal challenges within the Latinx Club, including past allegations against its president, add complexity to this political landscape.
