Food insecurity concerns spur Mendo County community forum on preserving local aid - Local News Matters
Mendocino County residents held an emergency town hall to confront uncertainties regarding funding for local food programs. Claudia Wenning, a local health practitioner, outlined resources available for low-income residents dealing with food insecurity. Sergio Perez, executive director of Nuestra Alianza de Willits, reported that his nonprofit serves approximately 70 families each month through its food pantry, which focuses on providing emergency support. In addition to food challenges, speakers discussed housing instability, with Carolyn Ponikvar from the Willits Shelter Action Group explaining a motel program offering temporary shelter to homeless individuals. Mendocino County Supervisor John Haschak highlighted the need for community unity to tackle these pressing issues, especially as federal social service cuts loom.
He expressed confidence in the community's ability to devise local solutions. The town hall reflected a growing recognition of the interconnectedness of food and housing security. Mendocino County's Homeless Services Continuum of Care provides additional resources, including shelter and food assistance.
