FOG descends on Point Arena Council urges public to keep fats, oils, grease out of sewers - Local News Matters
The Point Arena City Council has unanimously approved sending letters to residents and business owners, urging them to avoid putting fats, oils, and grease (FOG) down the sewer system. The city has observed a steady increase in grease buildup, which can reduce treatment efficiency and lead to costly sewer blockages. Each business and resident is responsible for maintaining their grease interceptors, which are designed to trap grease before it enters the sewer system. Instead of creating new regulations, the city will enforce existing codes related to the maintenance of these interceptors among local food businesses. Letters detailing the maintenance requirements will be sent out between Thanksgiving and Christmas, accompanied by a grease trap maintenance log for tracking cleaning efforts.
The city's wastewater plant chief operator will periodically inspect businesses to ensure compliance and evaluate the need for new interceptors. The total cost for sending these letters is approximately $200. The next City Council meeting is scheduled for December 16, where residents can participate both in person and virtually.
