Lurie touts 40 million in federal funding to modernize Muni fleet with new hybrid buses - Local News Matters
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) secured nearly $40 million in federal funding to purchase up to 24 new diesel-hybrid buses. The U. S. Department of Transportation grant will modernize Muni’s fleet, which faces a projected budget deficit of $306 million, expected to rise to $434 million by 2030. SFMTA Director of Transportation Julie Kirschbaum emphasized that the investment will reduce breakdowns and provide more reliable service for the system's 500,000 daily riders.
This funding aligns with the city’s Heart of the City recovery plan, aimed at revitalizing downtown. The agency intends to replace aging vehicles and continue the transition of its existing fleet of 575 hybrid buses. The investment not only improves transportation efficiency but also contributes to environmental sustainability. Muni's modernization efforts reflect a commitment to better public transit in San Francisco. This initiative is vital to meeting the growing demands of the city's commuting population.
