Giant metal turkey gobbles up donations for annual Corte Madera Thanksgiving food drive - Local News Matters
The 20-foot-tall metal turkey has returned to Town Center Corte Madera, acting as a unique donation site for the annual holiday food drive. This initiative, organized by the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, marks its 33rd year and aims to assist food-insecure families in Marin County and San Francisco. Donations of non-perishable items are accepted until December 31, with the food bank stressing the critical need for community support due to a recent increase in food insecurity. John Lister, a local artist and former set designer, crafted the turkey, while a team of local artists contributed to its design. According to the food bank's 2025 Hunger Report, over 20% of Californians experience food insecurity, a situation worsened by federal cuts to SNAP benefits.
The turkey's design involved precise CNC cutting, showcasing the blend of art and social responsibility. Although “Big Tom” in Minnesota holds the official title of the world's largest turkey statue, this Corte Madera installation has become a beloved community tradition. The food drive not only garners donations but also fosters community spirit during the holiday season.
