Mayor Lurie Expands City's Shelter Capacity To Ensure San Franciscans Can Sleep Inside During Winter Months

San Francisco, CALocal News

Mayor Daniel Lurie launched the Interfaith Winter Shelter program in San Francisco, which will provide shelter for up to 80 people experiencing homelessness each night during the winter months. The program operates from November 24, 2025, to March 29, 2026, rotating through five different faith-based locations. Participants will receive hot meals, mobile showers, and can secure beds through a self-referral process. Lurie highlighted the need for expanded shelter capacity, stating that every individual deserves a warm place to sleep. This initiative aligns with his Breaking the Cycle plan, which addresses homelessness and behavioral health crises in the city.

Recent developments include the opening of new supportive housing and shelter facilities, along with recovery-focused interim housing programs. The Interfaith Winter Shelter has served the community for 37 years, fostering collaboration among diverse faith communities. Shireen McSpadden, Executive Director of HSH, noted the program's commitment to providing compassionate care and essential services to those in need.
