Fort Bragg targets long-vacant storefronts with fines for property owners, registry plan - Local News Matters
Fort Bragg City Council is set to tackle the problem of abandoned commercial properties by considering fines for landlords who do not comply with new regulations. City Manager Isaac Whippy emphasized that this issue has persisted for 10 to 15 years, affecting the city’s vibrancy and economy. A recent survey showed that residents feel vacant spaces contribute to a decline in safety and economic vitality. Under the proposed ordinance, property owners must register any vacant buildings and display clear signage with contact information. Those who fail to comply will incur annual and monthly fees to offset the city's monitoring costs.
Whippy highlighted that the new approach shifts from complaint-driven enforcement to proactive measures aimed at revitalizing downtown. The Council seeks to enhance Fort Bragg's appeal to tourists and support local businesses that strive to beautify their properties. The resolution is scheduled for a vote on November 24 at the Town Hall.
