Transcending trauma Former lifers extol benefits of emotional awareness therapy - Local News Matters
Formerly incarcerated individuals gathered at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center on October 16 for a symposium on emotional awareness and healing, organized by the Emotional Awareness Therapy program. Participants engaged in discussions about vulnerability and accountability, sharing personal stories of trauma and transformation. Sol Mercado, who served 16 years for murder, recounted her history of abuse and her healing journey through gardening. Caroline Robles and Michele Scott also shared their narratives, highlighting their commitment to helping others post-incarceration. Research from the CDC shows that about 97 percent of incarcerated individuals experienced multiple adverse childhood events, which often lead to violence.
The symposium aimed to address these issues and emphasize the importance of therapy and community support. Participants took ACE exams, revealing high scores indicative of traumatic childhoods. The event underscored the potential for healing and resilience through emotional awareness and community engagement.
