Mayor Lurie Launches Program To Connect San Franciscans In Vehicles To Housing More Quickly
Mayor Daniel Lurie launched a program designed to expedite the transition of San Franciscans living in large vehicles to permanent housing. Funded by private donations through the Breaking the Cycle Fund, this initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of the city's housing system. Recently, Lurie celebrated the opening of several housing facilities, including those providing supportive housing for young people and new beds for LGBTQ+ adults. The new program reserves homes for families prior to tenant identification, minimizing delays in the housing process. To further support this initiative, Lurie secured $13 million over two fiscal years for rapid rehousing subsidies aimed at families in vehicles.
Shireen McSpadden, Executive Director of the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, underscored the program's goal of bridging the gap between property owners and individuals experiencing homelessness. The program reflects a broader commitment to address the behavioral health and homelessness crisis in San Francisco. By enabling families to access stable housing more rapidly, officials hope to significantly impact the city's homelessness landscape.
