San Jose nonprofit groups fill void as families face food insecurity, CalFresh benefit delays - Local News Matters
In response to food insecurity exacerbated by delays in CalFresh benefits, Grail Family Services and Sacred Heart Community Service are providing critical support to struggling families in San Jose. Grail Family Services distributed $150 grocery vouchers to 100 families, thanks to funding from Destination: Home and Arteaga’s Food Center. Executive Director Veronica Goei remarked on the adverse effects of food insecurity on children's health and development, stressing the importance of community support. Meanwhile, Demone Carter of Sacred Heart Community Service reported that as many as 700 people seek food assistance each day due to rising costs and uncertainty. The nonprofit plans to distribute 7,000 food boxes worth $200 to $250 each during the holiday season, which will include essential items like turkey, chicken, and fresh produce.
Both organizations highlight the need for a functional safety net to prevent families from falling into deeper poverty. Goei noted the resilience of East San Jose residents, who have rallied to support initiatives during tough economic times. The combined efforts of these nonprofits illustrate a community united in addressing food insecurity and supporting vulnerable families.
