San Leandro councilmember Azevedo pleads not guilty to federal corruption charges - Local News Matters

San Francisco, CALocal News

San Leandro councilmember Bryan Azevedo pleaded not guilty to federal charges of wire fraud and making false statements to government agents. Prosecutors allege he accepted a $2,000 bribe from an unnamed housing developer and took actions to benefit the company, including advocating for an emergency shelter ordinance. During the investigation, Azevedo allegedly lied to FBI and IRS agents about his involvement in the scheme, which reportedly lasted about a year. Court documents indicate he worked with two unnamed coconspirators linked to the housing company. This case follows a broader federal corruption investigation involving other local officials and developers, including former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao.

Azevedo's connections with the Duong family, who also faced scrutiny for political contributions, add complexity to the case. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison and fines reaching $500,000. Despite the charges, Azevedo remains on the City Council, with his term ending in 2028.
