San Joaquin County supervisors spend 1.5M to finish Stockton rescue mission expansion - Local News Matters

San Francisco, CALocal News

San Joaquin County supervisors authorized $1. 5 million to complete the Gospel Center Rescue Mission's expansion, a facility focused on aiding homeless individuals and those recovering from addiction. This funding follows a previous $2 million contribution in 2021, bringing the total investment from the county to $3. 5 million. The mission's expansion will provide space for 110 additional residents, including 27 beds for recuperative care and 83 for the New Life Program.

Supervisor Robert Rickman expressed concern about the lack of support from local cities like Stockton, highlighting a $150,000 donation from the Stockton City Council as insufficient. Other board members commended the mission's successful approach to reducing homelessness and praised its CEO, David Midura. They noted the mission's work as a potential model for state initiatives. Without the funding, the mission risked losing a crucial $2 million grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank. This financial support underscores the county's commitment to addressing homelessness in the region.
