Salinas produce company fined 125K after workers exposed to pesticide, DA says - Local News Matters
The Growers Company, based in Salinas, has been fined $125,194 for violating pesticide laws that endangered employees. On October 9, 2023, a supervisor allegedly allowed 93 fieldworkers to enter a lettuce field treated with Sivanto Prime, despite warnings. Symptoms reported by 66 workers included nausea, headache, and irritation, highlighting the serious health risks associated with pesticide exposure. The company only took 34 of the affected workers for medical evaluation, failing to adhere to legal requirements for care. A felony charge against the supervisor was initiated, but he has since passed away.
The Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office termed the investigation a priority due to the significant health impact on multiple individuals. Established in 1950, The Growers Company has faced scrutiny for its labor practices and commitment to worker safety. This case underscores the ongoing challenges in agricultural labor safety regulations and enforcement.
