Ukiah Valley Water Authority plans water rate increases, public hearing set for February - Local News Matters
The Ukiah Valley Water Authority is considering a 3% water rate increase for Ukiah residents, set to begin in March and extend through July 2029. Consultant Mark Hildebrand outlined the proposal at a Ukiah City Council meeting, indicating that this increase is less severe than those expected in neighboring districts like Millview and Redwood Valley. Under California law, residents can formally protest the increase, and if more than 50% submit written protests, the hike cannot proceed. Sean White, the city's water and sewer director, explained that regular, smaller increases are crucial for managing infrastructure costs and avoiding larger hikes in the future. Notices and protest forms will be sent to residents in mid-November, and a public hearing is scheduled for February to gather community input.
The Ukiah City Council will discuss the proposed rate hike further during its meeting on November 19. This plan aims to ensure the financial stability of water services while addressing community concerns. Hildebrand's presentation highlights the differing financial situations among the member agencies involved.
