Oakland mayor calls gun violence a 'crisis' after Skyline High School shooting - Local News Matters
A shooting at Skyline High School in Oakland on Wednesday afternoon resulted in one student being shot and two juveniles arrested. Mayor Barbara Lee, who has maintained close contact with police, expressed her support for the victims and their families, calling gun violence a crisis that must be addressed. The wounded student was shot shortly before 1:30 p. m. and is currently in stable condition after being transported to the hospital.
Officers at the scene arrested two juveniles and discovered two firearms. Lee condemned the incident, stating that schools should be sanctuaries for learning, not sites of violence. The Oakland Unified School District confirmed that classes will proceed as scheduled, along with support services for affected students and staff. This incident follows a series of safety concerns at Skyline High, including a parking lot shooting last May and a lockdown in September due to a reported weapon. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Oakland Police Department.
