Lurie picks Beya Alcaraz, former pet-shop owner, as District 4 supervisor
Mayor Daniel Lurie appointed Isabella "Beya" Alcaraz as the new District 4 supervisor in San Francisco, filling the vacancy left by the recall of Joel Engardio. At 29, Alcaraz is a lifelong Sunset resident and former pet-shop owner with no prior political experience, but she took the initiative to meet Lurie at a local market to express her interest in the role. She highlighted the community's desire for a City Hall that collaborates with residents, echoing Lurie's sentiments. Alcaraz will face a crucial vote on an upzoning plan aimed at increasing affordable housing shortly after assuming office. Despite her support for the plan, she plans to propose amendments to address concerns from her constituents.
Lurie commended her for bringing a fresh perspective to leadership in the Sunset district. Alcaraz's personal background includes growing up in the neighborhood, where her parents worked in local education. She aims to rebuild trust within the community and foster collaboration.
