Mendocino County board narrowly supports PGE's Potter Valley dam removal plan - Local News Matters
The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors approved a nonbinding resolution supporting PG&E’s plan to decommission the Potter Valley Project’s dams, voting 3-2. Supervisors Madeline Cline and Bernie Norvell opposed the resolution, expressing concerns about its potential negative effects on local communities. The resolution, introduced by Supervisor Ted Williams, emphasizes the importance of water security over power generation, though it did not mention the Potter Valley Project in the agenda title. Williams stated that the resolution represents a shift from conflict to collaboration, aiming to unite various stakeholders for a sustainable water future. Cline criticized the process as rushed and lacking transparency, arguing for a comprehensive assessment of community impacts before proceeding.
The decommissioning could aid fish restoration in the Eel River but may also reduce water availability. PG&E plans to decommission the project as early as 2028, which raises concerns over water supply. The next Board of Supervisors meeting is scheduled for Nov. 18, where further discussions may take place.
