SF Mayor Lurie picks 29-year-old former pet store owner as new supervisor for Sunset District

San Francisco, CALocal News

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie appointed Beya Alcaraz as the new supervisor for District 4 after Joel Engardio's recall by voters. Alcaraz, 29, is a lifelong resident of the Sunset neighborhood and previously operated a local pet store. In her inaugural speech, she emphasized the importance of community ties, declaring, "We want to be represented by real, down to earth people. " Alcaraz is willing to revisit the controversial closure of the Great Highway, which had sparked significant voter backlash against Engardio. She also plans to introduce amendments to the Family Zoning Plan to enhance housing availability in District 4, where development has lagged.

Alcaraz's approach aims to bridge the divide in the community, focusing on practical solutions and local engagement. Mayor Lurie praised her as a problem solver and community advocate. Alcaraz will serve until the next election in June 2026, when District 4 residents will choose their next supervisor.
