Californians starting to see SNAP benefits reinstated, SF residents also get extra food aid
A federal appeals panel mandated the White House to reinstate full SNAP benefits for November, while the Trump Administration sought Supreme Court intervention regarding the funding. Many California residents, including those in San Francisco, have begun receiving their full SNAP payments, which are crucial for food security. Troy Brunet, a local SNAP recipient, expressed gratitude for receiving his benefits after previous cuts due to the government shutdown. The City of San Francisco, in partnership with the Crankstart Foundation, also provided additional emergency aid, helping residents like Brunet cope with food expenses. Governor Gavin Newsom stated that California will continue to fight for families to access food resources, emphasizing the need for support during political standoffs.
The reinstated SNAP payments follow a lawsuit filed by California and over 22 other states against the Trump administration for unlawfully withholding funding. In San Francisco, nearly 10% of households rely on SNAP benefits, underscoring the program's significance. Local officials, including Supervisor Shamann Walton, noted that while the additional benefits are appreciated, many residents remain concerned about future funding stability.
