SF Muni operator appears to fall asleep while speeding 50 mph through curve, jolting passengers
The SFMTA confirmed that operator fatigue was the cause of a September incident in which a North Judah light rail train jolted passengers while traveling over 50 mph. The event occurred on September 24 at 8:37 a. m. during the busy morning commute, with many passengers on board. Video footage revealed the operator appearing to sleep at the controls prior to the incident, leading to several passengers falling but thankfully avoiding derailment.
The operator was placed on non-driving status during the investigation, which found no mechanical issues with the train’s braking system. In response, the SFMTA is enhancing training for operators to recognize signs of fatigue and is working with Siemens on software to limit speeds in curves. SFMTA's Director of Transportation reaffirmed the agency's commitment to safety and accountability following this unacceptable incident. The operator has not been named due to personnel privacy laws, and the investigation has drawn attention to the importance of monitoring operator alertness.
