Waymo's self-driving cars hitting Bay Area freeways, expanding to San Jose

San Francisco, CALocal News

Waymo officially expanded its robotaxi service to include Bay Area freeways and San Jose International Airport, enhancing connectivity for travelers. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan welcomed the news as the city gears up for significant sporting events in 2026, including the Super Bowl and World Cup. Although initial access has been limited, with some users encountering booking issues, Waymo intends to gradually broaden its service area. Autonomous vehicle drop-off spots have been established at both terminals of the airport, making it only the second airport in the U. S.

to provide such service. SJC Director of Aviation Mookie Patel praised Waymo as an efficient option for business travelers heading to tech hubs nearby. UC Berkeley Professor Scott Moura cautioned that Waymo must continue proving its safety to gain public trust. Currently, services are confined to Central San Jose, with future expansions planned. The rollout aligns with the city’s goal to improve transportation options for the influx of visitors expected for major events.
