Santa Cruz, unionized city workers reach tentative agreement to avoid strike - Local News Matters

San Francisco, CALocal News

Santa Cruz city workers represented by SEIU 521 reached a tentative agreement, averting a planned strike. The contract includes a 13. 5% pay raise over three years to address rising living costs and additional compensation for bilingual abilities and hazardous positions. Union president Ken Bare highlighted the agreement as a significant victory for city workers and the community. City Manager Matt Huffaker expressed optimism about finalizing the agreement but did not disclose specific contract details.

The new contract also establishes paid leave for traumatic job experiences and other workplace safety improvements. SEIU 521 represents around 800 employees working in various city roles, including trash collection and wastewater management. Union members will cast their votes on the agreement this Wednesday. Successful ratification could lead to improved working conditions and morale among city workers.
