Lurie picks Beya Alcaraz, former pet-shop owner, as District 4 supervisor

San Francisco, CALocal News

Mayor Daniel Lurie appointed Isabella “Beya” Alcaraz, a 29-year-old art and music teacher, as the new District 4 supervisor following Joel Engardio's recall. Alcaraz, who has a background as a pet-shop owner and is a lifelong Sunset resident, proactively approached Lurie about the position. She stated her commitment to leading with the community's needs in mind, emphasizing the importance of a City Hall that collaborates with residents. Alcaraz will face an immediate challenge with a proposed upzoning plan for affordable housing that has sparked backlash from local constituents. She acknowledges the necessity of increasing housing to comply with state mandates but intends to suggest amendments to the current proposal.

Her family background in the Sunset community adds to her local credibility, as her parents worked at a local school. Alcaraz's role will be pivotal in shaping housing policy and maintaining community trust as she steps into her new position. The mayor did not require loyalty on future votes as a condition for her appointment.
