Lurie picks Beya Alcaraz, former pet-shop owner, as District 4 supervisor

San Francisco, CALocal News

Mayor Daniel Lurie appointed Isabella “Beya” Alcaraz as the new District 4 supervisor, filling the vacancy left by the recall of Joel Engardio. Alcaraz, 29, is a lifelong resident of the Sunset and a former pet-shop owner, marking her first venture into politics. In a statement, Lurie commended her local roots and business experience, noting her proactive approach in expressing interest for the position. Alcaraz will face immediate challenges, including a contentious upzoning plan designed to increase affordable housing, which has sparked debate among Westside residents. While she supports the creation of more housing, she plans to suggest amendments to the mayor's proposal.

Alcaraz described the Sunset as an ideal community and stressed the importance of maintaining its character while meeting housing needs. She believes her appointment is a reflection of community encouragement and aims to foster trust and collaboration. Lurie’s office did not require her loyalty on future votes as a condition of her appointment.
