The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors selected three finalists for the sheriff position after interviewing six candidates during a special meeting. The candidates included former San Francisco Police Department Capt. Robert Yick and City Manager John Doug Davis. Brian Wynn Huynh Travis, Kenneth Binder, and David Lazar emerged as the finalists. The board aims for a long-term appointment following the firing of former sheriff Christina Corpus amid a series of scandals.

Each candidate addressed their approaches to modern policing, focusing on community engagement and transparency. Travis highlighted the importance of rebuilding morale and public trust within the Sheriff’s Office. Binder, with extensive experience in law enforcement, previously served as Acting Sheriff and emphasized stability. The new sheriff will serve until 2028, as they complete Corpus' term.
