San Mateo supervisors approve 30K grant for emergency food aid amid SNAP delays - Local News Matters
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved a $30,000 grant to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to enhance food donations amid delays in federal food assistance payments. The grant aims to alleviate food insecurity for families and unhoused individuals affected by the suspension of SNAP benefits for November. Supervisor Noelia Corzo, who sponsored the resolution, highlighted the urgent need for food support, especially for families with children who rely on school lunches during breaks. The funding will enable St.
Vincent de Paul to provide an additional 2,600 meals on weekdays at its Homeless Help Center in San Mateo. Grocery distribution will primarily target families with children in District 2, which includes parts of San Mateo, Foster City, and Belmont. This grant comes from Measure K, a 2016 sales tax intended to address critical needs in the county, including emergency preparedness and resources for vulnerable populations. Board President David Canepa and other supervisors supported the initiative, while Supervisor Jackie Speier abstained and Supervisor Ray Mueller was absent. The ongoing federal delays in SNAP payments have heightened the need for local food assistance.
