Halloween meets matrimony Scaremonies shine spotlight on historic Port Costa School - Local News Matters
The Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder’s Office launched its inaugural Halloween wedding ceremonies, termed "Scaremonies," at the historic Port Costa School. Built in 1911, the school has a rich history and has been restored by the Port Costa Conservation Society after being closed in 1966. The growth of the destination wedding market, projected to reach $47. 69 billion in 2025, reflects a trend toward unique experiences. Local ghost stories add an intriguing layer to the school’s reputation, with residents sharing tales of hauntings.
Joseph Barton, the county’s records archive manager, highlighted how these weddings help promote local attractions. The school now serves as a vibrant community hub, hosting various events beyond weddings. Ongoing upgrades by the PCCS have enhanced accessibility while preserving the building's historical character. This year’s Scaremonies featured four weddings on October 31, showcasing both the venue's charm and its community significance.
