'We're dying a slow death here' San Jose music venue closure is a loss for indie artists - Local News Matters

San Francisco, CALocal News

The Art Boutiki, a cherished music venue in San Jose, will close at the end of December after 16 years of supporting local artists. Owner Dan Vado reported a 25% decline in attendance and stated the venue has not turned a profit since the pandemic began. Art Boutiki served as an incubator for emerging talent, offering a welcoming space for musicians of all genres, which Urbanowski described as a community lifeline. The closure will leave a significant gap in San Jose’s music scene, pushing local artists to seek opportunities outside the city. The venue's diminishing attendance was exacerbated by rising costs and competition from other venues like The Break Room, which opened in 2021.

Vado, who has not taken a paycheck since COVID-19, expressed his frustration over the lack of support for his establishment. He aims to close out the year with a New Year's Eve celebration, honoring the venue's impact on the local community. The loss of Art Boutiki signifies a troubling trend for local music culture, as it reduces opportunities for artists to showcase their work.
