Live music and luchadores How the Tenderloin does Day of the Dead
The Tenderloin neighborhood in San Francisco is set to host a Día de los Muertos block party on Saturday, featuring live music, Lucha Libre wrestling, and community altars. The festival has grown from a small gathering to covering three city blocks, showcasing the area's vibrant Latino culture. Cyntia Salazar of the Tenderloin Community Benefit District expressed excitement about the increasing interest in local celebrations, emphasizing the need for community engagement. This year’s event has tripled in size, reflecting the neighborhood’s desire for cultural recognition. District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood supports the initiative, advocating for regular street fairs to enhance community visibility.
The block party will occur on Golden Gate Avenue between Jones and Larkin streets from 2 p. m. to 8 p. m. In recent years, the Tenderloin's celebrations have shifted locations, demonstrating a growing commitment to cultural events.
This initiative not only celebrates Día de los Muertos but also aims to attract more foot traffic to the Tenderloin.
