San Mateo supervisors to hold public forum Tuesday on choosing next county sheriff - Local News Matters

San Francisco, CALocal News

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will hold a public forum on Tuesday to solicit community feedback on choosing a new sheriff after the firing of Christina Corpus on October 14. Undersheriff Dan Perea, who was appointed by Corpus, currently fulfills the sheriff's responsibilities but will not be designated as interim sheriff. The board is considering three options: appointing a sheriff for the remaining three years of Corpus's term, allowing Perea to continue until a special election, or appointing a temporary sheriff until a special or regular election takes place. Board President David Canepa stated that community input is vital for shaping the future of public safety in the county. The estimated cost of a special election is $3.

2 million, which has raised concerns among supervisors about its feasibility. Supervisor Noelia Corzo expressed reservations about the risks associated with electing a sheriff, particularly regarding cooperation with U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The board must finalize its decision by November 13, 30 days after Corpus's removal.

The special meeting will take place at 6 p. m. in the Board Chambers in Redwood City and will be live-streamed.
