Comprehensive, free of charge dental and vision care available through Medi-Cal - Local News Matters

San Francisco, CALocal News

California health officials emphasize that many Medi-Cal beneficiaries remain unaware of their vision and dental benefits, resulting in significant underutilization of these services. Dr. Donny Shiu confirmed that beneficiaries are entitled to a free eye exam every 24 months, which can detect serious conditions like glaucoma and cataracts. Additionally, Medi-Cal offers extensive dental services, including check-ups, cleanings, and various treatments, all at no cost to members. However, starting July 2026, some adult beneficiaries will see their dental coverage limited due to new state policies affecting undocumented immigrants and certain lawful permanent residents.

These individuals will only qualify for emergency dental care, while pregnant individuals and those under 19 will continue to receive comprehensive dental benefits. Durham noted that dental care can be costly, but Medi-Cal members should not incur any expenses for medically necessary treatments. To access these services, beneficiaries can consult the Find-A-Dentist directory on the Medi-Cal website. The officials stress the importance of preventative care to avoid serious health complications in the future.
