San Francisco, CALocal News

Monterey County has appointed Ray Buenaventura as its new Public Defender, effective December 1, overlapping with retiring Public Defender Sue Chapman until the end of the year. Buenaventura brings over 30 years of experience, having started in the Los Angeles Public Defender’s Office in 1993, where he handled serious cases including homicide. He later worked in the San Mateo County Public Defender’s Office and became Chief Public Defender in Lake County in 2023, transforming its public defender program. In his new role, he will supervise an office of approximately 62 attorneys and support staff, managing around 11,000 cases annually. The Monterey County Public Defender's Office represents indigent adults and juveniles charged with crimes and mental health clients facing civil court restrictions.

Buenaventura earned his B. A. in legal studies from UC Berkeley and his Juris Doctor from Whittier Law School. His appointment signifies a commitment to effective legal representation in the county. The transition occurs as the office continues to prioritize compassionate legal advocacy for vulnerable populations.
