'Come Hell or High Water' D.I.R.T. Festival pushes ahead at Dance Mission
The D. I. R. T. Festival at Dance Mission Theater runs from October 25 to November 2, showcasing artists who confront significant socio-political issues under the theme “Come Hell or High Water.
” Curated by Krissy Keefer and Stella Adelman, the festival features performances both inside the theater and at the 24th Street Bart plaza. Despite losing National Endowment for the Arts funding, the theater reallocates remaining funds to address current societal challenges. Program A includes Naka Dance Theater's “Fugitivity,” which examines themes of freedom and the underground networks supporting those in peril. Program B, set for October 30 and November 1, features “Rock In A Weary Land,” a collaboration that investigates the legacy of Black protest dance. Additionally, Palestinian violinist Georges Lammam will perform alongside pianist Jeanette Cool.
Keefer articulates the festival's urgency, stating, “We are literally fighting for our lives. ” This festival not only entertains but also fosters community solidarity amid a turbulent socio-political landscape.
