San Rafael sanctioned campers to move into interim cabins in next phase of housing plan - Local News Matters

San Francisco, CALocal News

San Rafael will transition 70 unhoused residents from sanctioned tents along Mahon Creek Path to 65 private cabins in an interim housing site at 350 Merrydale Road. The project, budgeted at approximately $12. 5 million, will provide essential amenities such as electricity, heating, and shared facilities like kitchens and bathrooms. Alicia Owens, a former resident, highlighted the need for understanding and support for those facing homelessness. The interim site will operate for two years, with the potential for an extension if additional funds are secured.

City officials emphasized the importance of this temporary solution while permanent affordable housing is developed, with a commitment to establish at least 80 units by June 30, 2028. The Merrydale site is modeled after successful tiny home communities in California and will be managed by Foege Schumann Global Disaster Solutions. Mayor Kate Colin stated that the new housing project will benefit the entire community. Additionally, changes to the city's camping ordinance are anticipated to further restrict camping in public spaces.
