A Woman’s Place, a shelter accommodating 56 women under the 13th Street freeway, was recently visited by city employees conducting a sidewalk cleaning. Lillyonna, a 31-year-old who occasionally stays at the shelter, articulated the difficulties faced by the homeless community in accessing services. She noted that outreach workers often lack the resources to help when shelter beds are full. Lillyonna called for increased housing options and case management to aid in life management skills. Her attempts at recovery have been complicated by personal loss, particularly after her mother’s death, which led her to discontinue therapy.
