Day 166 at the 16th St. Plaza Mumblz, Mugzy and Richie

San Francisco, CALocal News

Crowds returned to the east side of Mission Street in San Francisco on Sunday evening, where vendors and drug users gathered, contrasting with the area's earlier calm. During morning and afternoon visits, few homeless or drug users were visible, highlighting the shifting dynamics of street life. Mumblz, a 38-year-old resident, shared her experience of living on the streets for 13 years and her ongoing struggles with fentanyl and crack addiction. She recently received temporary housing at Mission Cabins, which are slated to close soon for the construction of an affordable housing project. Richie, another local, expressed his belief in the freedom of street life, stating he prefers it to paying rent.

He noted that interactions with police are generally respectful, emphasizing a desire for understanding despite their different circumstances. The upcoming closure of the Mission Cabins raises urgent questions about the future of residents like Mumblz and Richie. As the city grapples with homelessness, the community's resilience and challenges remain evident.
