University of the Pacific opens new dorm exclusively for veterans, active-duty military

San Francisco, CALocal News

The University of the Pacific has opened Manor Hall, a newly renovated dormitory specifically for veterans and active-duty military students. This initiative aims to recognize and support those who have served in the U. S. military, with 159 veterans currently enrolled among the university's 7,000 students. The $7 million renovation features 11 suites and rooms capable of accommodating 33 students, including accessible kitchens and bathrooms for those with disabilities.

UOP President Christopher Callahan emphasized the value of military students, noting their maturity and discipline contribute significantly to campus diversity. Major funding came from retired Air Force Colonel John Rogers and San Joaquin County, which contributed $2 million. The establishment of dedicated housing for veterans comes at a time when universities are under scrutiny regarding diversity and inclusion. UOP's initiative provides a supportive environment for student veterans to connect and assist one another. This program enhances the university's appeal and commitment to serving those who have served the country.
