Eight Injured In Early Morning Fire at Apartment Complex In San Rafael
A significant fire at a 19-unit apartment complex in San Rafael injured eight individuals and displaced approximately 50 residents early Thursday morning. The fire began around 5:30 a. m. on Canal Street, prompting firefighters to respond quickly and contain the blaze by 7 a. m.
While two neighboring buildings were evacuated as a safety measure, damage was primarily limited to the complex involved. One person sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized, and firefighters conducted at least two rescues during the incident. Local resident Craig Ponsford described the scene, noting, "Lots of screaming happening," as people attempted to escape. The Red Cross arrived to assist displaced residents, many of whom were Spanish-speaking, highlighting the community’s urgent need for support. The fire's cause remains under investigation as officials assess the extent of the damage.
San Rafael Fire Chief Robert Sinnott characterized the incident as a "large fire," emphasizing the severity of the situation.
