Mayor Lurie Announces Next Phase of Waymo Operations on Market Street to Drive Downtown's Comeback with New Transportation Options coming to Market Street August 26

San Francisco, CALocal News

Mayor Daniel Lurie announced the launch of limited rideshare services on Market Street, commencing on August 26, as part of efforts to revitalize downtown San Francisco. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) will evaluate rides provided by Waymo and select commercial black cars operating on Uber and Lyft platforms. This initiative aims to boost foot traffic and support the city's economic recovery following a significant decline during the pandemic. Hotel bookings for events at Moscone have surged nearly 70% from 2024, indicating a positive trend in local tourism. SFMTA Director Julie Kirschbaum reaffirmed the priority of safety for cyclists and pedestrians amidst the expansion.

Mayor Lurie also noted the reduction of overall crime in Union Square and the Financial District by more than 40%. The collaboration with Waymo reflects a commitment to enhancing transportation options while promoting a vibrant downtown. This initiative is part of a broader strategy, including the PermitSF initiative, to cut red tape for businesses and stimulate growth.
