San Mateo sheriff takes the stand, addresses allegations of conflict of interest, retaliation

San Francisco, CALocal News

During her removal hearing, Sheriff Christina Corpus faced intense scrutiny over allegations of misconduct, including retaliation and inappropriate relationships. The hearing is part of a lengthy process initiated by a 400-page investigation that accused her of fostering a culture of intimidation in the Sheriff’s Office. Corpus argued that she is a target of a “good ol' boys club” and denied any romantic involvement with her former Chief of Staff, Victor Aenlle. Evidence presented included text messages and discussions about pricey gifts, such as diamond earrings, which Corpus attributed to cultural practices of paying with cash. The Board of Supervisors took the unprecedented step of placing Measure A on the ballot, allowing them to remove her, a move that voters overwhelmingly supported.

The County's legal team seeks to establish cause for removal based on alleged violations of law and neglect of duty. Corpus’s defense emphasized her love for animals and her desire to visit Aenlle’s ranch, countering claims about her motivations. The ongoing hearing is a critical step in the process to determine her fate as Sheriff.
