We will not back down Oakland leadership denounces Trump over comments on crime
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee and local leaders denounced President Trump for criticizing the city and suggesting he might deploy the National Guard to address crime. At a City Hall press conference, Lee noted that Oakland has achieved a 28 percent reduction in overall crime in the first half of 2025. She and other speakers accused Trump of using racially charged rhetoric to justify federal overreach in cities led by Black mayors. Councilmember Rowena Brown stated that such narratives distort the truth about predominantly Black communities. In response, a White House spokesperson urged Democratic leaders to focus on public safety rather than criticize Trump’s policies.
Councilmember Carroll Fife challenged Trump’s authority on crime issues, referencing his criminal record. Local leaders pledged to stand united against Trump’s divisive comments and continue their fight for justice. They emphasized that Oakland will not serve as a scapegoat for Trump's political distractions.
